We recently bought a dog—officially for our 9-year-old son so he has a companion, but unofficially because of my husband’s and my midlife crisis. He doesn’t know it yet, but soon he’ll read this blog and find out.
In this story, I’d like to share a common conversation among dog owners regarding their pets' poo—one of the most important topics for them, especially for new owners like us.
When I was a kid, my parents bought a dog for my sister and me. My mom was in her thirties at the time. Now I wonder—was it possible she was already having a midlife crisis at that age??? Anyway, we lived in an apartment building with no garden, so a few times a day, we had to take the dog outside for a proper walk to make sure he did his business. Every time we came back, my mom would shout, “Has he pooped? Has he pooped?” And every single time, I’d think, Why the hell is she asking me this? What’s wrong with her? (Mostly, the answer was “No.”) Like a broken record… But now I know why! She lived in constant fear that our dog would poop somewhere inside—behind the TV, the sofa—because we hadn’t given him the chance to do it outside.
And now, it’s my turn. I’ve become that freak who counts how many times a day my dog poops, just so I can sleep peacefully without the smell of fresh feces waking me up in the middle of the night. Pathetic.
